when I download it from their website a get a zip folder with lots of
weired files
The Joomla! web-based installer is part of the package you downloaded.
The package needs to be uploaded to your server space and you need to create a database with MySQL before you start installation.
Although these two articles were written for Mambo, the process is exactly the same.
Check out this tutorial to see how to get the files onto your server: http://mambo-tutorials.com/preparing-to-install-mambo
And in this one, you can learn how to set up the database: http://mambo-tutorials.com/create-mysql-database
Once those two things have been done you load up the URL to your Joomla files in your browser. The browser will automatically load the Joomla installer. Just follow the steps and enter the relevant details in the installer entry fields and as long as your server space meets the minimum system requirements for Joomla your new site will be installed.

Joomla is a CMS.
You download the file and extract it in the sites root file.
It will place all the files in the right places.
Then go to you website url and joomla setup will walk you through the rest of the installation.

alternatively if your still struggling installing joomla find a webhost that has a one click install of joomla – a lot of hosts use fantastico, this normally has a simply one click install feature which is really handy for installing joomla
